.com.au domains registered for 2 years should only cost between $30 to $50 Aus.

2. Hosting or that monthly fee you have been quoted to keep your website up and running should not exceed more than $18 a month.

In some cases you may be quoted a cheap price for your website but the design firm then charges you that little bit extra for your domain and monthly/yearly hosting fee.

3. Get the advice from a couple of designers then sift through the information and do some analysis and go with who you think will do the right job.

4. Be aware of Cowboys. In today's age with the free information available anyone can learn to build a website and offer you their services cheaply. What you may not be aware of is your website may struggle to receive FREE search engine visitors due to:

a. A lack of keywords placed in your content.

b. A lack of search engine friendly webpage file names.

c. A lack of use of proper search engine optimisation techniques throughout the web pages.

d. Slow loading webpage content.

e. Design elements ignored.

5. Your domain should be registered in your name and you should appear as the registrant when you complete a whois.

The registrant is the legal owner of the domain.

6. Invest in Search Engine Optimisation first rather than website advertising because this is a long term investment which will result in long term success.

Its best to feel the pain short term rather than long term. Remember the moment you stop advertising your visitors will also stop visiting your website.

7. New websites with a newly registered domain will take a good 6 months until the website starts to gain good traffic from the search engines. The key to success is patience and lots of content.

8. The domain name you choose can have a positive or negative effect with whether your website will gain more free traffic from search engines.
